2024-04-20T00:24:00.000Z

The passenger rights portal Airhelp has named the best airports in the world in 2023. Munich Airport performed poorly – especially in one category.

Munich – It almost seems like its own city outside of Munich: Franz Josef Strauss Airport. Thousands of people fly from here every day on vacation or to appointments around the world. In the current summer flight schedule, a total of 194 destinations are served from Munich. But not everything always goes smoothly at Munich Airport. As at any other airport in the world, there are tripping hazards lurking for passengers that can complicate the journey. For example, overbooked flights, as the case of a couple from autumn 2023 shows.

In its annual ranking, the German passenger rights portal “Airhelp” evaluated airports around the world and named both the best and the worst airports worldwide. Franz Josef Strauß Airport near Erding fared anything but well.

Airhelp chooses the best airports in the world: Munich Airport performs very poorly

In its 2023 ranking, Airhelp evaluated a total of 194 airports around the world - but only the best-known and most used airports. Airports for which there is no data were not evaluated. Munich Airport only came in 116th place in the Airhelp ranking and was therefore in the bottom third of the overall rating. Overall, Franz Josef Strauss Airport received an Airhelp Score of 7.39 points. In 2022, the airport came in 89th with 7.44 points.

Munich Airport performed best in the 2023 ranking in the shops and food category. Airhelp awarded 8.1 of the ten possible points for this. Munich Airport received 7.8 points from customer reviews. However, the most deductions were in the most important category - punctuality, which accounts for 60 percent of the overall rating. Out of ten possible points, Airhelp only awarded seven points for the punctuality of flights at Munich Airport. Most recently, Munich Airport also performed poorly in a ranking for cheap package holidays.

Best airports in the world: Frankfurt Airport performs even worse in the ranking

Two other major German airports performed even worse than Munich. Hannover Airport landed in 118th place with an overall score of 7.38 points. Frankfurt Airport was rated the worst. The largest German airport only received an Airhelp Score of 6.86 points. The Fraport performed particularly poorly when it came to punctuality. Airhelp only gave it 6.3 out of ten points.

If you look at the ten worst airports in the world, you will also find well-known European airports there. London Gatwick Airport came in second to last. Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon performed only slightly better. These are the ten worst airports in the world according to the Airhelp ranking:

  • Banjarmasin Syamsudin Noor International Airport, Banjarmasin (Indonesia): 6.39 points
