The decision fell in extra time: Julia Görges has qualified for the second round of the US Open. She was already close to defeat. Andrea Petkovic is also ahead.

The German tennis player Julia Görges is almost eliminated in the first round at the US Open in New York. At the score of 5: 6 in the third set she had to fend off a match point. In the end she won against Russian Natalia Wichljanzewa 1: 6, 6: 1, 7: 6 (7: 1). Now she meets wildcard starter Francesca di Lorenzo from the USA.

Andrea Petkovic is also in the next round - for the first time since 2016. The 31-year-old won against the Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu 6: 3, 6: 4. The world ranking 88th, which formerly belonged to the top ten, gets it now on Thursday to do with the two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic.

Earlier on Monday, Laura Siegemund won her opening game. Former world number one Angelique Kerber, however, was eliminated in the first round of the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season. In total, five German women compete in the individual competition in Flushing Meadows.
