Tragic accident at the Formula 2 race in Spa-Francorchamps. The 22-year-old pilot Anthoine Hubert from France was fatally injured. This was announced by the race officials in the evening.
Formula 2 rookie Hubert, who is also part of the junior program at Renault, crashed his car from Team BWT Arden in the second lap after the notorious curve Eau Rouge in the boundary wall and was hurled back onto the track. Juan Manuel Correa from the USA could not dodge in time and drove in at full speed.
While the 20-year-old Correa rolled over and his vehicle remained upside down, Hubert's car broke into several pieces. Rescue teams rushed immediately to the accident site to provide the young drivers quickly. Correa suffered broken legs in the accident, his condition is stable after initial information.
The race was stopped immediately after the heavy collision. There was no restart. Racing driver Mick Schumacher was not involved in the incident.
