Andrea Petkovic has missed her first knockout round at a Grand Slam tournament for over five years. The Darmstadt lost in the third round of the US Open against the Belgian Elise Mertens 3: 6, 3: 6. Last Petkovic had reached in 2014 at the French Open the round of the last 16 in a major.
After a false start (0: 3) Petkovic added to the number 25 of the seedling list their first impact loss of the tournament, after half an hour, the first set was still lost. Mertens was more consistent and precise in their basic strikes, another break from Petkovic in the second set did not change the deserved victory of the Belgian. After 72 minutes Mertens turned her first match point.
The French Open winners Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies, however, have reached the round of 16. The German doubles won against the young American pair Martin Damm (15) and Toby Kodat (16) 6: 2, 7: 5. Krawietz and Damm had surprisingly won the title in Paris in May.
