Novak Djokovic's trip to defend the US Open title was halted after he withdrew from the fourth round against Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka with a shoulder injury.
Wawrinka was leading 6-4, 7-5, 2-4 in the last Grand Slam of the year before the withdrawal of world number one Serbian rivals to secure a quarter-final appearance.
After losing the second set, Djokovic asked to undergo treatment in his shoulder and sat without a shirt on the side of the pitch.
Wawrinka will play fifth-seeded Russian Daniel Medvedev, who overcame German qualifier Dominic Cooper to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in his career.
