In 1977, an Italian finally moved to the semi-finals in New York. Matteo Berrettini finished the series against Gaël Monfils. After the game, Berrettini said he remembers "no points, only the match ball".

Matteo Berrettini is the first Italian to move to the men's semi-finals of the US Open for 42 years. The 23-year-old won in the quarterfinals in New York against the French Gaël Monfils 3: 6, 6: 3, 6: 2, 3: 6, 7: 6 (7: 5). As the only Italian to date, Corrado Barazzutti reached the semi-final in 1977 in New York.

On his way to the match win he had awarded four match balls in the fifth set, even with a double penalty at the score of 5: 3. Only the fifth match ball Berrettini used after 3:57 hours in the tiebreak. Monfils had big problems with the service and hit a total of 17 double mistakes. With the same number of the last German single player in the tournament, Alexander Zverev, had failed in the second round to Diego Schwartzman.

"I do not remember any points, just the match ball," Berrettini said and added with a laugh, "I also remember the double fault, to be honest (...) I'm really happy and proud." For Berrettini it is the first semi-final with a major in his career.

Berrettini's opponent in the semifinals on Friday is either French Open winner Rafael Nadal or Schwartzman. The other finalists will be played by Grigor Dimitrov and Daniil Medvedev.

Bencic first time in the semifinals

In the women's competition, the Swiss Belinda Bencic also reached the semi-finals. The 22-year-old tennis player won against the Croatian Donna Vekic 7: 6 (7: 5), 6: 3 and thus stands for the first time in one of the four Grand Slam tournaments in the round of the last four. Bencic used against Vekic, who had turned off in the round before Julia Görges, after 1:41 hours their third match point.

For the finals Bencic plays against the winner of the duel between Bianca Andreescu and Elise Mertens. In the second semifinal favorite Serena Williams plays against Ukrainian Jelina Switolina.
