Bianca Andreescu won the title in her first appearance in the main draw of the US Open. The only 19-year-old Canadian beat Serena Williams 6: 3, 7: 5. The 37-year-old lost her third Grand Slam final within a year. Most recently, she won the Australia Open in January 2017.
Williams went straight in the first set, gaining more direct points than Andreescu, but also causing more unnecessary mistakes. So the American lost her first serve directly. In impressive rallies Williams was behind this residue, only the seventh game lasted over ten minutes. Andreescu was not only powerful, but also strong nerves. Anders Williams: With a double penalty she gave the first set after 42 minutes.
Also the first service game in the second set lost Williams. And again she had problems with her serve, no one brought her into the field in the game. This time, however, Williams countered and secured the rebreak - albeit with luck. The crucial point bounced off the edge of the net into the field of Andreescu, who had no chance to reach the ball.
Simple mistakes at Williams
Who thought Williams would get back into the game, was wrong: Already their next serve gave them off again. The 37-year-old seemed confused, tried as in the first set to achieve quick points, thereby causing simple mistakes to the next loss of a service game.
As a result, Williams attack attempts almost desperate. By contrast, Andreescu played uninhibited by the 23-time Grand Slam winner, was dominant in the ball changes and made with the next break to 5: 1 for the presumed preliminary decision.
Supposedly because Williams strengthened again with Andreescu's first match point. The fourth break in the second set was followed by a dominant serve by the American. Suddenly, the 19-year-old looked confused and gave her next service play from the hand - to zero. Only in the eleventh game of the second set Williams again showed nerves, made simple mistakes and gave Andreescu thereby two more match balls. With her third overall match ball, the Canadian secured the title.
