Rafael Nadal is the US Open champion 2019. The Spaniard won in the final against Daniil Medvedev 7: 5, 6: 3, 5: 7, 4: 6, 6: 3. After his triumphs in 2010, 2013 and 2017, it was his fourth success in New York. In a spectacular game, the Russian outsider showed courage and fighting spirit - but his recovery was not rewarded.
Already the second point of the first game was a highlight: A long rally ended with Nadal successfully passing the netpost with his forehand. In the third game Medvedev made the first break of the match. But Nadal was not worried and took the re-break - and after 62 minutes the set.
In the second round Nadal scored the first break to 4: 2. Medvedev continued to play with courage and a lot of risk, but he could not turn the sentence. Significantly faster than the first round Nadal took the second. Everything seemed to amount to a quick success for the 33-year-old in Flushing Meadows.
Last meeting was clear
But the third set went differently than expected: Medvedev now had to risk more - and was rewarded for his courage. First, the 23-year-old countered a break from Nadal directly with a re-break - and then took him another game from, with which he won the set.
So it went into the fourth round. There, too, the two fought hard for points and games. At first, Nadal seemed to be better again in the match, but then Medvedev managed the break for 6: 4 - and he equalized after sets.
The fifth movement: Nadal was initially booed by the public because he took a lot of time on the serveings. But with spectacular blows he pulled the fans back on his side - and came to two breaks. Although Medvedev also managed a break, but Nadal brought the lead to the finish.
For Nadal and Medvedev it was the second meeting. At the Masters in Montreal Nadal had in 71 minutes 6: 3, 6: 0 prevail. Even then, the outsider had played some impressive - and in the end but then clearly lost.
