2019-09-13T17:31:29.850Z

Rémi Cavagna won the 19th stage of the Tour of Spain. For Tony Martin, the Vuelta is prematurely ended - the 34-year-old was involved in a mass collapse.

The French professional cyclist Rémi Cavagna has won the 19th stage of the 74th Tour of Spain as a successful runaway. The 24-year-old rescued after 165.2 kilometers from Avila to Toledo with five seconds ahead of Sam Bennett from Ireland and the Czech Zdenek Stybar to the finish.

The overall classification continues to lead the Slovenian Primoz Roglic 2:50 minutes ahead of world champion Alejandro Valverde from Spain and his Colombian Movistar team-mate Nairo Quintana (3:31 minutes behind). However, the former ski jumper Roglic had to survive a shock in a crash just under 70 kilometers from the finish.

Tony Martin, like his team-mate Roglic, was involved in the crash and had to retire. At first, nothing was known about the nature and severity of Martin's injuries. It remains unclear what the fall in terms of the upcoming World Cup in the British county of Yorkshire (22 to 29 September) means.

For Martin it was the third premature end of a big round trip in series. In the Tour 2018 Martin had suffered a vertebral fracture and had to give up, at the Tour de France in 2019 he had been disqualified after a fight with Ineos professional Luke Rowe.

The 20th and penultimate stage of the Vuelta on Saturday will bring the decision in the fight for the red jersey. On top of the favorites there are six mountain climbs on the 190.4 kilometers from Arenas de San Pedro to Plataforma de Gredos. On Sunday, the Tour of Spain in the capital Madrid comes to an end.
