The German top wrestler Frank Stäbler has qualified for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Stäbler reached the Bronze medal at the World Championships in Kazakhstan and thus secured his participation in 2020.
After the 30-year-old failed on Sunday in the second round, he was now allowed to compete in the hopeful round, because his left-back opponent Ismael Borrero Molina reached the final afterwards. Stäbler won in his two fights against the Romanians Mihai Mihut and Hansu Ryu from South Korea.
In the afternoon, the three-time world champion against the Egyptian Mohamed Elsayed also has the chance to win the bronze medal. More important for him, however, was to qualify in the unusual for him weight class up to 67 kilograms for the Olympics.
In 2020, his former weight class was abolished. Therefore Stäbler, whose ideal weight is 74 to 76 kilograms, had to lose several kilos. "It's a path through hell," he said shortly before the World Cup on his diet.
