The international elite in women's tennis returns to Berlin. Twelve years after the end of the German Open, the Grass Court Championships Berlin will be held from 13 to 21 June 2020 at the LTTC Rot-Weiß facility, the organizing agency Emotion Sports confirmed.
Berlin receives the WTA tournament license from Birmingham. Chancellor Angela Merkel takes over the patronage for the tournament, which is in preparation for the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon. The facility with the 7,000-capacity Steffi Graf Stadium receives three grass pitches. Three more places will be created in the Berlin Olympiapark.
"Berlin was from 1979 to 2008 with the German Open an internationally highly regarded tournament venue," it says in a statement by the organizer. In Berlin's Grunewald, where sand was played so far and Germany's former top player Steffi Graf won nine times, the current German stars such as the three-time Grand Slam tournament winner Angelique Kerber are now to play on grass. The prize money should be around one million US dollars.
