The Prosecutor General's Office in Lisbon has brought charges against Football Leaks informer Rui Pinto. In their nearly 200-page indictment, the investigators accuse the 30-year-old Portuguese crime in 147 cases. These include, inter alia, allegations of attempted blackmail, illegal access to confidential data and breach of the secrecy of correspondence.
According to him, Pinto should not only have hacked into the computer systems of numerous international football clubs, associations, players' adviser agencies and law firms, but also obtained illegal access to highly sensitive data from prosecutors and authorities in his home country. According to the indictment Pinto is said to have penetrated a total of 307 times in the computer system of the Attorney General. In addition, he is accused of hacking e-mails from the former chief investigator DCIAP, who is conducting the case against him. Pinto has always denied on request of SPIEGEL, to be a hacker.
Delivery from Hungary to Portugal
The former student of history has been in custody in Lisbon since mid-March, isolated from other inmates, in a police station. In January, Pinto was arrested on the basis of a European arrest warrant in Budapest and held under house arrest for two months before a Hungarian court approved his extradition to Portugal. Immediately before his arrest, Rui Pinto had been in close contact with the French law enforcement agency Parquet National Financier, which wanted to put the Portuguese in a witness protection program and use his insider knowledge for their investigative work. The investigators from France are now in possession of Pinto's data carriers, which had been confiscated at his arrest earlier this year in Budapest. The volume of these hard drives is 26 terabytes.
Rui Pinto is the whistleblower who has leaked over 70 million confidential football documents to SPIEGEL for more than three years, a data volume of about 3.4 terabytes. SPIEGEL and its partners in the European Investigative Collaborations research network have since published more than 800 articles based on the Football Leaks dataset. Numerous of these disclosures led to criminal, sports law or association law consequences for participants. For example, after football leaks in Spain, Cristiano Ronaldo was convicted of tax evasion and sentenced to a fine of just under € 19 million and a suspended sentence of two years.

It is currently unclear whether Pinto should remain in provisional custody after the prosecution.
