Megan Rapinoe has been named FIFA World Player of the Year by Fifa. The 34-year-old prevailed in the final selection against her teammate in the US national team Alex Morgan and the English international Lucy Bronze.
Rapinoe captained the US team at the World Cup in France and also won the Golden Ball for Best Player and the Golden Boot for Best Scorer.
With her criticism against US President Donald Trump, she also made off the court for attention. Already during the tournament, she had announced that in the event of a title win to waive a presidential reception. "I'm not going to the fucking white house," she said.
Ellis is a world trainer
As world coach Rapinoes coach was awarded in the US national team Jill Ellis. The 53-year-old, like Rapinoe, won the World Cup for the second time and was named Fifa's Coach of the Year in 2015.
After the World Cup, Ellis had announced her resignation as national coach in October. The receipt of the award was accordingly one of their last official acts.
In addition to Ellis were the Dutch national team coach Sarina Wiegmann, which led their team to the Vice World Cup, and England coach Phil Neville nominated. Apparently, Neville's nomination was a reason to call the award "Fifa World Coach (F)".
