The German national football team has relegated sporty from the top division of the Uefa Nations League - but the transition to the second division could still be spared the DFB.
According to information from the German Press Agency and the Sports Information Service, the Uefa Executive Committee will be discussing a reform of the competition that was only introduced last year at its meeting in Ljubljana on Tuesday in Slovenia. Accordingly, the A-League as the highest of the four divisions for the upcoming round in the fall of 2020 to be increased from twelve to 16 teams. Germany would then like Poland, Croatia and Iceland despite sporting failure not have to relegate to the second-rate B-League.
In addition, the four newcomers from the B-League would come: Ukraine, Sweden, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Denmark. In addition to Portugal, which had won the first edition in 2019, the final tournament participants Netherlands, Switzerland and England as well as the second runners-up: France, Belgium, Italy and Spain remain
Descent "no end of the world"
"This is certainly not the end of the world, but it is already frustrating," said DFB director Oliver Bierhoff to the failure in the Nations League in November. The national football team had to take the next sporting setback five months after the World Cup knockout and finished in their threesome group behind the Netherlands and world champion France winless last place.
Now it could be at the next edition from September to November 2020 but again duels with the continental peak. In the B-League would be possible opponents, among others, Turkey, Norway or Slovakia. The Nations League groups will be released in March in Amsterdam.
Positive feedback on the League of Nations
In contrast to Germany, where the Nations League was often viewed skeptically, the competition for many other football countries, both sporty and economic, is a win. This positive feedback would now do justice to the reform and more games in the A-League, according to Uefa circles.
For 16 teams in the A-League, the DFB-Elf in the second half of the year would not have a single test match after the European Championship in 2020, but six mandatory matches in the Nations League, two each in September, October and November. In the spring of 2021 then starts the qualification for the World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
