Primera División: Barcelona's victory, Barcelona's concern

2019-09-24T22:01:36.274Z

FC Barcelona were under pressure after a weak start to the season against Villarreal. The game was won by the Catalans despite a mistake made by Marc-André ter Stegen. But Barça is again bothered by Lionel Messi.

Barcelona have celebrated a home win against Villarreal, but renewed injury worries about Lionel Messi could spoil their enjoyment. At the start of Matchday 6 of the Primera División, the Catalans won 2: 1 (2: 1). Superstar Lionel Messi, who was in the starting lineup for the first time this season after a break in injury, could not play through.

After 28 minutes, the 32-year-old stepped off the pitch and sat next to the turf for treatment. It took a good three minutes before Messi returned to the field.

Presumably, the cause of the Messi problem was further behind in time. For while he had been involved in many actions in the early stages of the game and prepared the 1: 0 by Antoine Griezmann per corner, he remained then for minutes without ball contact. Messi continued to play after the treatment, but at half-time he stayed in the cabin, Ousmane Dembélé replaced him.

Whether Messi was seriously injured or the change was a precautionary measure was not clear at first. Apparently, however, was not broken that calf injury, the Messi missed the first four games of the season - because he was treated against Villarreal on the left thigh.

On Monday, the Argentine was crowned World Player for the sixth time. How dependent Barcelona is on Messi's place came last season, when he had been directly involved in 73 of 138 competitive games. For this balance he needed 50 missions.

Ter Stegen misses

The other two goals of the game were particularly worth seeing. Arthur scored in the 16th minute with a long-range shot to make it 2: 0, the ball changed very late and suddenly his trajectory and landed near the angle in the gate.

The 2: 1 by Santi Cazorla was achieved from outside the box. Cazorla's goal in the 44th minute did not last. Keeper Marc-André ter Stegen seemed to have miscalculated the shot, because he jumped a bit too early and then reached past the ball. The national goalkeeper had been in an outstanding form recently. The debate as to whether he or Manuel Neuer should be the number one in the DFB goal was rekindled.

For Barça, which started as weakly as the season since 1994, it was the third league victory. As a result, the master temporarily jumps to fourth place in the table. At least for one night standings is the FC Granada. Three days after beating Barcelona 2-0, Real Valladolid's Andalusians drew 1-1 (1-1). Real Madrid meets Osasuna on Wednesday (9pm, stream: Dazn).
