Bastian Schweinsteiger, the 2014 FIFA World Cup winner with Germany, announced his retirement at the age of 35 after the end of the MLS season.
Schweinsteiger, who has been with the Chicago Fire since 2017, is one of the most capped German players with several trophies with Bayern Munich and Germany for 17 years.
Schweinsteiger played at Bayern Munich from 2002 to 2015, winning eight league titles and seven German Cup titles, as well as winning the 2013 Champions League with the German club.
He then spent a short time with Manchester United from 2015-2017 before joining the Chicago Fire.
"It is time now and I will finish my career at the end of the season," Schweinsteiger said in a statement on his social media accounts.
"I want to thank you and Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Chicago Fire and Germany. You have made this amazing time possible for me."
Schweinsteiger has made 121 appearances for Germany and scored 24 goals and capped his international career by winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
