Rugby: Two arrears, one loss and yet Wales moves into the quarter

2019-10-09T15:35:20.414Z

World number two Wales are in the quarter-finals, but Fiji have had a hard time with the team. Concerning playmaker Dan Biggar, who had to leave the field after a head injury.

Wales entered the quarter-finals at the Rugby World Cup in Japan. In a tough and balanced game against Fiji, the world rankings won 29:17 (14:10). The Welsh had to cope in Oita Prefecture two arrears and the failure of playmaker Dan Biggar. Overall, there were four yellow cards in the game.

At 14:17, Biggar crashed into a high ball with team-mate Liam Williams and crashed his head on the ground. Although Biggar was able to leave the field on his own after a treatment break, he was taken out of the game. This is mandatory in rugby after head injuries.

For Biggar it was already the second head injury in this tournament. Already against Australia the Fly-Half, in German-speaking countries also called "connector", had to leave the field as a result. For the final group match against Uruguay, where Wales is all about becoming the first in the group, Biggar is definitely out.

Hat trick by Adams

Wales still caught up with the three-point deficit. Josh Adams was the deciding man. He had already shot in the first half a 0-10 deficit with two attempts, one run into the opposing end zone, almost single-handedly (17, 30th). Adam's third attempt at the hat-trick (60.) meant 22:17 - and thus the preliminary decision.

Fiji did not come back, Williams scored the fourth for the Welsh with a spectacular attempt to earn a bonus point. On the left side he collided in a duel with two opponents, but brought the ball with one arm in the end zone (68.).

Problem for the Welsh: In addition to Biggar injured Williams and Jonathan Davies. While national coach Warren Gatland downplayed Williams' thigh problems, Davies would need further investigation into how severe the injury is.

Whether the players will fit for the quarter-finals, in which they either meet England or France, is unclear. But for the game against Uruguay Gatland already prepares alternatives. "We have players who are a bit unfamiliar with them, but in training we already let them play on the positions," he said.

Scotland - Russia 61: 0 (21: 0)

In Shizuoka Prefecture, on the other hand, the spectators did not experience a thrilling match, but given the height of the Scottish victory over Russia, an even more exciting group final will set in on Sunday. Because Scotland scored four attempts, they are handed a win against Japan without an opponent's bonus point to move into the quarter-finals and knock the hosts out of the tournament (12:45 pm, TV: ProSieben Maxx). However, if Scotland does not make more than three attempts and Japan gets a defensive bonus point because they lose with seven or fewer points, Japan will keep coming.
