Alexander Zverev is in the semifinals of the Shanghai Masters. In the quarter-finals, the 22-year-old German won 6: 3, 6: 7 (7: 9), 6: 3 against Roger Federer, the match lasted 2:04 hours. For Zverev it is the first win over a top 10 player this year. His next opponent will be determined in the afternoon between the Austrian Dominic Thiem and Matteo Berrettini from Italy.
In the second set Zverev had three match balls, but with some spectacular blows forced Federer the tiebreak. There Zverev earned two more opportunities to end the match, which he forgave with minor mistakes.
With his first ace of the match Federer finally decided the tiebreak for himself, but caught in the third set a false start: Like the first serve gave Federer, and could not catch up the residue. The otherwise so calm Swiss was the anger about his own game to note, in the fourth game he even got a point deduction, because he had repeatedly knocked the ball off.
It is not the only triumph of a new generation player at the tournament in Shanghai. Previously, the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas 3: 6, 7: 5, 6: 3 prevailed against Novak Djokovic. In the semi-final, the 21-year-old Greek meets US Open finalist Daniil Medvedev from Russia. The 23-year-old had won in the quarter-finals 6: 3, 7: 6 (7: 4) against the Italian Fabio Fognini.
