Alexander Zverev clearly missed his second tournament victory this year. The German professional tennis player lost 4: 6, 1: 6 in the final of the Masters event in Shanghai against Daniil Medvedev on Sunday and had no chance. With an ace Medvedev turned his first match ball after just 73 minutes.
Zverev's defeat does not come unexpectedly: although the 22-year-old recently improved significantly, he surprisingly won 6: 3, 6: 7 (7: 9), 6: 3 in the quarter-finals of Shanghai thanks to his strong service. Medvedev, however, has been in great shape since the beginning of August, reaching the finals in each of the past six tournaments, including the US Open. Even before the final in Shanghai, Zverev had called his opponent "currently the best player in the world".
Despite the defeat, Zverev took a big step towards qualifying for the ATP Finals in mid-November in London, for which the top eight players in the world rankings qualify. Zverev is currently in sixth place, Medvedev is fourth. Last year, Zverev won the title in London, celebrating the biggest success so far in his career.
