The German ice hockey runner-up Red Bull Munich has set his manager Christian Winkler as a substitute goalkeeper for a short-term defeat in the Champions League. The sports director was licensed on Tuesday for the final round game at Färjestads BK in Karlstad, Sweden as a backup for Kevin Reich. He came in 1: 3 but not used. Winkler was at his active time goalkeeper, including in the Bundesliga.
The strange step had become necessary because Daniel Fießinger had dropped out as number two in the gate because of an infectious illness in the morning shortly before the charter flight. The Munich were already determined before the last round game as a group winner, the match in Sweden had only statistical value for them. Therefore, coach Don Jackson spared a number of players, including goalkeeper Danny from the birches. Because the DEL top match against Straubing is due on Thursday, the EHC was still training in Munich on Monday and did not fly to Färjestads until the morning of the match.
