Two DFB opponents could be determined: EM draw will be for the European Championship allotment

2019-10-17T07:56:25.213Z

The German national team is likely to face Ukraine and Hungary at the 2020 European Championship. Why is that already known before the draw? This is made possible by the complicated mode with twelve hosts.

On 30 November, the groups for the European Football Championship 2020 in Bucharest will be drawn. However, then only 20 European Championship participants are determined, the remaining four nations will be added in March 2020, when the 16 best-ranked and not yet qualified teams of the League of Nations compete in a playoff tournament against each other. Then there could be a second draw in April if, for example, Ireland, Romania or Azerbaijan qualify as hosts of the EM 2020 or if politically sensitive games threaten.

For the German national team, the first draw in Bucharest could also be a farce for another reason - if the DFB-Elf qualifies, which is likely given three points ahead of Northern Ireland. In certain circumstances, there are already two opponents for the group stage with Ukraine and Hungary. This is made possible by the complicated mode of the Pan Europa tournament with twelve hosts.

With two qualifying games to go, Ukraine have become the first in Group B and only need one point from their last game against Serbia to be one of the six best qualifying teams in the draw's first pot (here Overview of all qualification groups).

Germany plays safely in Munich

Other most promising candidates for this pot are England, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Belgium. If Germany does not catch the Netherlands from the top of Group C, the DFB team is likely to be the best of the ten runners-up in Pot 2 and will automatically move to European Championship Group F with Munich as the home venue.

England, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy would be assigned as EM co-hosts in this scenario their respective home groups in London, Amsterdam, Bilbao and Rome. From pot 1 remained Belgium and Ukraine for the still free groups B and F with the venues St. Petersburg / Copenhagen and Munich / Budapest. Since Ukraine is not allowed to be allocated to Russia for political reasons, according to the Uefa decision, it would automatically be in the German group.

The situation is somewhat different for the Hungarians: If the team of the Italian coach Marco Rossi qualifies directly for the European Championship, they would also be the co-hosts with the venue Budapest before the draw as a German preliminaries opponent in the group F. Hungary are in second place in Group E, two points ahead of Slovakia, which has played one less game. Slovakia will face leaders Croatia on 16 November and the final decision will be made on 19 November, when Hungary will play in Wales and Slovakia will face Azerbaijan.
