Argentine star Lionel Messi has refused to sign a life-long contract with his club Barcelona, who joined him in 2000 at the age of 13.
"He has received an offer to sign a lifetime contract in Barcelona," Messi was quoted as saying by Spanish media.
"I don't want to play if I am not in good shape," Messi said. "I want to compete and continue to fight for the goals."
Messi's current contract with Barcelona expires in June 2021 and has recently given the green light to enter into negotiations to renew his contract.
Messi was recently crowned for the sixth time in his history with the Golden Shoe award for the best scorer in the European leagues during each season.
