The BVB and the final stages: Borussia Dortmund was before the eighth Bundesliga matchday on eighth place in the table, because the games against Frankfurt, Bremen and Freiburg had ended only 2: 2. In Frankfurt and Freiburg the equalizer fell in the 88th and 90th minute. Against Borussia Mönchengladbach BVB was again in front and this time it was the 89th minute when a cross sailed through the penalty area and Florian Neuhaus had to hit the second post from close range. But this time, substitute goalkeeper Marwin Hitz came on for the ailing Roman Bürki, threw himself in the shot and prevented the equalizer.

The result: BVB kept the lead in the six-minute stoppage time and won 1-0 (0-0). Here you can read the game report.

The Briton Sancho tests limits: For the harmony in the squad BVB renounced his best assistants. Jadon Sancho should have returned to media reports late from the international match with the English national team. Therefore, the 19-year-old was thrown out of the squad by coach Lucien Favre. "He tests the limits from time to time," said manager Michael Zorc before the game at Sky. "And then we are here to set the limits." The decision was no alternative - "for the hygiene in the team".

Two fake nines: Apart from Sancho, Mario Götze and Paco Alcácer were also not available, so BVB's offensive possibilities were considerably reduced. Because the two central strikers failed in the squad, Favre opted for a flexible solution with Marco Reus and Julian Brandt as a dual tip. Brandt and Reus ran a lot, alternately falling and frequently seeking to combine. That looked partly pleasing, but the Dortmundern was missing - as well as in games with Götze in the top - a permanent reference station in the center.

First half: Favre had also changed the defensive. Center-back Manuel Akanji moved to the right side, but Julian Weigl played central. It took half an hour before BVB got into the game better and forced Gladbach on the defensive over a longer period. Scoring chances were on both sides, the goalless draw corresponded overall to the game.

Millimeter decision: It would have been the "calculated" story of the game day. The former Gladbach Thorgan Hazard scored the presumed lead for BVB (33rd minute) with a deflected shot from distance. The Belgian, looking for his best form in the season so far, met for the first time for his new club and cheered - unlike many other football professionals - so exuberantly, as if it had not given the five years in Mönchengladbach. However, as Reus was offside with a heel in the making of the attack, the match was denied recognition after the Video Assistant's test. VAR opponents ran hot afterwards, because it was very close and the decision was a long time in coming. But ultimately, only one thing is crucial: it was offside.

Second half: Thanks to Axel Witsels Laufweg, Hazards pass in the lead and Reus' leg shot against Yann summer BVB was from the 58th minute in the lead. What followed was a blueprint of the past few weeks. Dortmund had a good chance of the second goal, but was not determined enough in front of the goal and had bad luck, as Reus ran after Brandt's goal before summer and took his sight offside (84). Gladbach again felt the uncertainty of the hosts. Mats Hummels struck against substitute Patrick Herrmann to score a penalty for the visiting Borussia. In the end, Gladbach Dortmund pushed at times deep into its own half. For BVB it was a dither victory.

Winners of the game day: For some experts, BVB had already flown out of the title race after three draws in a row. Now the Dortmund are after the point losses of Bayern, Wolfsburg, Leipzig, Freiburg and Leverkusen in fourth place - tied with the Munich and only one point behind Mönchengladbach at the top. However, Favre may need a few more victories to regain unrestricted confidence throughout the club.
