The arch-rival becomes a stumbling block: Premier League leaders FC Liverpool suffered the first point loss of the season on matchday nine at Manchester United. Marcus Rashford scored the lead for United (36th minute), Adam Lallana scored late for a 1-1 (1-0) equalizer (85th minute). Manchester United are now ten points in 13th place, but Liverpool's lead (25 points), ahead of Manchester City, fell to four.

Before the kick-off, there was a first setback for the home side: The originally scheduled for the starting eleven Axel Tuanzebe had to fit with hip problems, for him moved Marcos Rojo into central defense. At Liverpool Alisson Becker celebrated his comeback. The goalkeeper was back in the starting line-up for the first time ten weeks after suffering a calf injury at the season opener against Norwich City, easing his first shot on goal from Scott McTominay (25). On the other side, David de Gea also had no problems against Roberto Firmino (34 ').

Liverpool anger over Rashford's hit

Shortly afterwards, United took the lead: Daniel James had set the pace on the right, his cross completed by Marcus Rashford in the middle to make it 1-0 for Manchester (36). There was a lot of protest from the Liverpool FC: Jürgen Klopp and his coaching staff had recognized a foul in goal formation.

The slow motion showed that United defender Victor Lindelöf Liverpool's Divock Origi had actually hit the shin bone during the ball capture. Referee Martin Atkinson did not punish the action after consulting with the video assistant and gave the goal. In the Premier League, a higher intervention threshold is common for the subsequent correction of decisions.

Even before the break, the video assistant had to be consulted again: Sadio Mané had achieved the alleged equalizer, the ball had jumped before him, however, before the hand (44). Since since beginning of the season hits, which are obtained with the help of hand or arm, can not count in principle, Atkinson took the gate back.

Flattering, later compensation

In the second half of the expected assault Liverpool was missing. Without the injured Mohamed Salah, the Reds did not succeed after the break for a long time, to play out a really high-profile opportunity. However, United's coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's decreed quintuplet did not last until after Andy Robertson's cross came in, substitute Adam Lallana made the happy equalizer (85 '). Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had a chance of winning the match in stoppage time, but narrowly missed the goal (90 '+ 2').

The draw meant that Liverpool missed out on Chelsea's Premier League starting record with nine of their first nine games. The Londoners had this feat in the 2005/2006 season succeeded.
