The insolvent former Bundesliga club SG Wattenscheid 09 has to stop playing in the Regionalliga West. The hope for new donors was not fulfilled. That informed the fourth division on Wednesday.
After all, it managed to get the game and training operation of the youth department. Accordingly, the club remains. A new board can now develop a future concept and gets the chance to send a men's team in a higher amateur league in the coming season at the start.
Wattenscheid 09 played four seasons in the Bundesliga in the early 1990s. Among others Souleyman Sané, father of today's international Leroy Sané, and today's coach Thorsten Fink were active for the Bochum club in the Bundesliga.
After the gradual athletic descent, the club fought for years for the financial survival. Bankruptcy proceedings were opened earlier this month. Until the last hope was to secure the regional league match at least until the end of the season.
