Only 3: 1 led, then 4: 2, then 5: 4: Long saw Arsenal in the League Cup round of sixteen as the winner. But Liverpool was unbeatable.

Liverpool have moved into the quarter-finals of the English League Cup. Jürgen Klopp's team defeated the Gunners at Anfield 5: 4 on penalties after 5: 5 (2: 3) after regular time. In the fourth minute of added time Divock Origi scored the decisive equalizer with his second goal. In the subsequent penalty shoot-out, Liverpool's keeper number three, Caoimhin Kelleher, parried against Dani Ceballos. The 18-year-old Jones Curtis turned the final score.

Both teams had set up numerous substitutes, Premier League and European Cup are more important than the League Cup. For Arsenal, the game started with a false start: In the sixth minute, Shkodran Mustafi wanted to clear a cross from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, but pressed the ball with his own knee instead. Arsenal's Lucas Torreira, who deflected a rebound from Liverpool goalkeeper Kelleher, made a better start. The next few minutes focused on 18-year-old striker Gabriel Martinelli, who initially scored two goals for Arsenal (26th, 36th minute) and then blamed a penalty kick on Liverpool's James Milner (43 ').

The second half continued to go on as a goaller: Mesut Özil was the first to pull back for Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who increased the lead to 2: 4 for Arsenal (54 '). Özil, who was only on the pitch for the Gunners for the third time this season, was involved in three goals. Liverpool equalized twice in the process and decided the following penalty shoot-out for themselves.

Liverpool vs. Arsenal is the pairing in the history of the League Cup with the highest scoring: 47 goals in 15 matches. The team of Klopp is unbeaten as a leader of the Premier League competition for nine games. With eight victories they won the cup most often, last in 2012.

Manchester United won the second round of the knockout round at Chelsea 2: 1 (1-0), Marcus Rashford was the match winner for Manchester with a brace (25th / penalty, 73rd). For Chelsea met the former Dortmund Michy Batshuayi (61) for interim compensation. Aston Villa won 2-1 (1-0) against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The quarter-finals will take place on the 16th of December, and the pairings will be drawn next Thursday. Manchester City, Leicester City, Everton, Oxford United (League One / 3rd Division) and Colchester United (League Two / 4th Division) are among the winners of the evening.
