Roger Federer has withdrawn from the Australian Open ATP Cup in January next year.
"It hurts me not to play in the newest and most exciting tournament of the season, but it is the right thing to do if you want to play longer in the ATP tournaments," world number three Federer said in a statement today.
Federer's decision to withdraw means that Switzerland will not participate in the tournament, which will be held from January 3 to 12, and that six other teams will qualify according to the rankings of the top players.
The $ 15 million tournament will be held in the cities of Brisbane, Perth and Sydney.
