Champions Barcelona suffered a shock 3-1 defeat at Levante in the Primera Liga on Saturday after wasting their lead and receiving three goals in seven minutes in the second half.
Barcelona returned to the top of the standings when they crushed Valladolid 5-1 in the middle of the week and were in a comfortable position today when Lionel Messi took the penalty in the 38th minute.
Barca's troubles began when Luis Suarez was injured after the goal and collapsed in the second half when Levante converted his first three shots on goal.
Jose Campania leveled in the 61st minute after a quick counterattack and then Real Madrid striker Borja Mayoral added the second goal in the 63rd minute with a superb shot from outside the penalty area and Nemanja Radoia extended the lead for the home side in the 67th minute with a free kick.
Messi quickly pulled one back to give Barcelona hope but the goal was canceled because of an offside by Antoine Griezmann after a video review.
It was Barca's third defeat of the season but remain top with 22 points from 11 games and Atletico Madrid and Real can clinch the summit if they win later in the day.
