Tennis: Ashleigh Barty wins WTA finals and record prize money

Ashleigh Barty has crowned an outstanding tennis year with the title at the WTA Finals. For her success, the 23-year-old collected a record prize money.



She was already the world's number one before the season finale of the top eight tennis players. Now it is officially the best of the year 2019: Ashleigh Barty has been the first Australian since 1976 to win the title at the WTA Finals. In the final, the 23-year-old won on Sunday against defending champion Jelina Switolina 6: 4, 6: 3.

All five previous games against the Ukrainian had lost to Barty. But this year, the French Open winner, who is the first Australian since 15 weeks leading the world rankings, unstoppable and turned after just under two hours her first of three match balls against the previous year's winner from the Ukraine. "It was the most incredible year for me," said Barty, who received a record prize money of nearly four million euros for her victory in Shenzhen, China.
