World title gone, no longer track record holders from Hawaii and now Patrick Lange also needs a new coach: For the triathlete ends a disappointing season with the separation of Faris Al-Sultan.

The two-time Ironman World Champion Patrick Lange and coach Faris Al-Sultan will go their separate ways in the future. One month after a long assignment at the World Cup in Hawaii, the management of the 33-year-old triathlete announced the decision. The end of the cooperation was "by mutual agreement," it said.

Al-Sultan had taken over Lange as coach in 2015 and led to the World Cup triumph in 2017 and 2018. "Faris and I have had a great time together over the past four years, and he has been instrumental in my great achievements in recent years," Lange quotes in the press release. Last season, however, also showed that "my demands on a coach tend to increase, while Faris had less time due to his new job as national coach of the German Triathlon Union."

Decision came as no surprise

"Patrick's need for care grew, my window smaller," said Al-Sultan the SPIEGEL to the separation. There had already been discussions over the year about a possible end to the cooperation, but the final decision had only been made after the end of the season. Lange had to accept some setbacks in 2019. In addition to the task in Hawaii due to fever - where Jan Frodeno won and at the same time broke Long's track record - he also stayed behind at the Ironman in Frankfurt or at the triathlon half-distance in Nice. In addition, Lange had not been able to train for the full year due to illness, as Al-Sultan told the SPIEGEL in an interview before the World Cup in Hawaii.

With whom Lange will work together in the future, is not yet clear. Al Sultan said he also wants to look after athletes in Hawaii next year.
