With the participation of 350 athletes, a sports marathon was organized on the occasion of the National Environment Day from the Umayyad Square towards Victoria Bridge, passing through Marja Square to Damascus Citadel to activate the role of athletes in protecting and preserving the environment.

Participated in the marathon athletes and bicycles from the General Sports Federation, clubs and schools of different ages competed among themselves to get the first places in the marathon, which is held within the activities of the third environmental festival under the title (with our cooperation to improve our environment), where Al Areen Sports Club won the first places.

The top three winners assured SANA that they were keen to win and register a new position for them to set an example in any work that contributes to the building of Syria.

Sami Al-Samir pointed out that preserving the environment is everyone's responsibility and we must work to protect it from deterioration and keep our cities clean.Henain Hassan, athlete of West Asian Athletics, said that the role of athletes is very important in preserving their environment and upgrading them and preventing any harmful action affecting them.

Al-Areen coach Mazen Zyoud told SANA that most of the club's players are distinguished and participated in several championships, pointing out that participation in the marathon comes to encourage any volunteer work that will protect the environment.

People with disabilities who have represented Syria in several international championships in swimming, cycling and running have had their participation, including Muhannad Sheikh Sroujieh and Masrawi Maarawi, who indicated that they will participate in any activity to preserve the environment.

For his part, Abdul Ilah Lababidi, the Syrian cycling team player, called for expanding such races and engaging various segments of society as they encourage participation in volunteering for cleanliness and afforestation. Awareness raising that will spread and protect the environmental culture.

The ecological festival includes many afforestation campaigns in different parts of Damascus.
