Eintracht Frankfurt had the chance of early entry into the knockout phase of the Europa League. Instead of a victory at Standard Liege but there was a defeat: 1: 2 (0: 0) was defeated by the Bundesliga club in Belgium. Zinho Vanheusden scored for the hosts (56th minute), Filip Kostic equalized for Eintracht (65 ') and Maxime Lestienne Liège won the victory in extra time (90' + 4 ').
Frankfurt (six points) is still second behind FC Arsenal (ten) after this fourth group stage matchday. Liège in third place, however, also has six points, the direct comparison between the two teams is a draw, the first leg had Frankfurt 2: 1 won.
In the final minutes it became turbulent. Kostic ran half left free on Liège gate, but pulled the conclusion and shot wide. Had he hit, Frankfurt would probably have won the game - and thus had the entry into the round of the last 32 sure. Instead, not one minute later, substitute Lestienne scored the 2-1 win for Standard.
In Liège Eintracht had previously been the superior team, but could not consistently use his chances. Among other things, Djibril Sow and André Silva (post) awarded within a few seconds a double chance (34th minute).
Excitement after fouling Rode
Gojko Cimirot had a great chance to take the lead, unseating keeper Frederik Rönnow (33.). The goalkeeper was powerless in the 1-0 later, it fell to a corner: Renaud Emond extended the ball on the second post, there defender Vanheusden pressed the ball over the line.
The 1-1 resulted in a notable free kick. Liège apparently speculated collectively that Frankfurt's Kostic would bring the ball over the wall - or even below - through the gate. A standard pro lay behind the wall to block a possible flat attempt; and goalkeeper Amaud Bodart neglected his goalkeeping. Kostic shot the ball flat right there.
Excitement caused a foul on Sebastian Rode. The Frankfurter was on his way into the penalty area after Gonçalo Paciência's preparation and was fouled by Konstantinos Laifis. He had previously seen yellow, the due yellow-red let referee Matej Jug but surprisingly stuck (69.).
