France has won the Fed Cup for the first time in 16 years. In the final in Perth, Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia prevailed in the decisive doubles against Australians Ashleigh Barty and Samantha Stosur 6: 4, 6: 3 and ensured with the point to 3: 2 for the third title of the French women after 1997 and 2003.
Mladenovic had no chance in their first match of the Australian Fed Cup debutant Ajla Tomljanovic at 6: 1, 6: 1. Subsequently, the world ranking first Barty France Caroline Garcia missed a "whitewash" - they won 6-0, 6-0. The German team had already lost in the first round against Belarus.
From 2020, the Fed Cup will be held in a six-day event with group matches. In the qualifying round, the German players have to compete in Brazil on 7 and 8 February. Until then, the new team boss should be determined. Former coach Jens Gerlach is now working with Julia Görges.
