Roger Federer defeated Italy's Matteo Brittini 7-6 6-3 in the men's tennis final.
Federer won 10 of his 11 points to clinch the first set after a break and then broke Brittini in the first set without losing a point.
Brittini, the first Italian to qualify for the tournament since 1978, also got three points to break Federer in the eighth game, but Federer continued his way through suffering and broke the break in the next half to seal the game in his favor.
Federer, who has won 17 games in the second round of the group stage, will likely need to beat Serbian Novak Djokovic the day before to secure a place in the semi-finals.
Federer failed once in 16 tournaments in the group stage in 2008.
