In the face of the crisis in their home country, Chile's football players are not traveling to Peru for the friendly match scheduled for next Tuesday. This was announced by the Chilean federation ANFP.
A corresponding decision of the players would have joined in the morning, the coaching and support team. National coach Reinaldo Rueda has already allowed the players to return to their clubs.
"It's a tough atmosphere, and I think we should not play out of respect for what's going on in the country," said Charles Aránguiz of the Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday.
For weeks, Chile has been experiencing the most severe social crisis in decades, sometimes with violent riots. On Tuesday, there were mass demonstrations in the country with several hundred thousand participants. The protesters call for radical reforms against social injustice.
"I support people, they stand up and demand justice, so they need to be supported," said Arturo Vidal. Most recently, the final of the Copa Libertadores was moved from Santiago de Chile to Lima.
