Bad end of the season for the DFB juniors: The current under-21 European vice-champion lost to Belgium 2: 3 and now has to fear for the direct qualification for the European Championship 2021.

The German U21 juniors have suffered a setback in qualifying for the European Championship in 2021. In Freiburg, they were defeated by 16,000 spectators in the previous group Belgium 2: 3: Loïs Openda (42. Minute, 70th) scored twice, Zinho Vanheusden had brought the guests in the 26th minute in the lead. Nico Schlotterbeck (38.) and Ragnar Ache (81.) scored the goals for the team of Stefan Kuntz.

After two games still loss-free Germans had to accept the first setback in the 26th minute: Vanheusden hit from half-left position. Goalkeeper Markus Schubert did not look well in the shot from the Belgian from an acute angle - the ball found its way into the net through his legs. Vanheusden almost scored the 0: 2, but his 33rd-minute penalty hit only the left post.

The local goalkeeper scored the equalizer: Nico Schlotterbeck, defender of SC Freiburg, struck out of the turmoil to make it 1-1 (38 '). But the visitors struck back before the break: Openda, striker of FC Bruges, exploited just before the break a great cross into the far corner (43).

Debutant Ache meets

In the second half, the DFB-Elf increased the pressure in a game of many duels and controversial decisions - but the goal scored again Openda (70). The kick-off for a turbulent final phase was the thigh-hit by substitute Ache (81 '). It was the first goal in national dress for the attacker of Sparta Rotterdam on his debut for the U21.

Substitute Mërgim Berisha also called for a penalty in extra time, but referee Fabio Verissimo waved goodbye. So it remained in the first German home defeat in the European Championship qualifiers for more than ten years, a 1: 2 against the Czech Republic.

Belgium are now in first place in qualifying group nine with seven points from four games. The DFB team follows with six points from three games in second place, two points ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The next opponent of the German team is Wales on March 31, 2020. Only the first of a group qualifies directly for the tournament in Hungary and Slovenia.
