The European Football Association Uefa introduces the season 2021/22 a new mode in the Champions League of women. So far, the premier class begins with the sixteenth final, this is to be replaced by a group stage with a total of 16 teams, the Uefa writes in a statement. In addition, the rights to television images of the tournament will be marketed centrally by the association from the group stage.
"The reform of the Uefa Women's Champions League decided today by the Uefa Executive Committee is a major step towards professionalizing women's club football," Jean-Michel Aulas was quoted by Uefa. Aulas is the chairman of the Women's Committee of the European Club Association (ECA), representing the interests of European clubs.
How does the new qualification for the Champions League from 2021/22 work?
- The incumbent Champions League winners as well as the champions of the top three teams (based on the five-year classification) are directly qualified for the group stage.
- All other champions of the European leagues play for two rounds on a so-called Champions Path for seven qualifying places for the group stage.
- Five teams qualify via a so-called League Path for the group stage. Here runners-up and third-placed in the preseason of their national leagues also play in two rounds to qualify for the group stage.

How does the new mode of the main round from 2021/22 work?
After qualifying, 16 teams will be in the group stage and will be split into four groups. The teams of a group meet as in the men on six matchdays in play and return matches. The games will take place between October and December. The best two teams of each group qualify for the round of 16. In the knockout stage between March and May, as usual, return matches will be played.
What does the new marketing of the Champions League mean?
Currently, only the final of the Champions League is marketed centrally by the Uefa, in the games before the clubs are responsible for their respective home game. As of 2021/22, the image rights will be marketed centrally by the association from the group stage. In addition, Uefa will partly take care of central sponsors for the tournament.
