2019-12-06T12:27:51.968Z

At the age of 58, chess player Igor Rausis experienced the most successful period of his career - until he was caught cheating. The punishment of the World Federation is tough.

During his games, Igor Rausis went to the bathroom and, with the help of a chess app on his cell phone, searched for the best moves to win the game. Over four years he climbed up in the world ranking with this method. At 58, he was the oldest player in the top 100 - then he was the chess World Federation Fide in July at a tournament in Strasbourg on the track. Rausis' cell phone was discovered in the bathroom.

The Fide has been convicted of possible similar offenses since 2015 until the tournament in Strasbourg against Rausis and has now punished him. The Czech was banned for six years, from 31 July 2019 to 30 July 2025, according to a statement issued by the World Federation. During this time, he is not allowed to participate in official tournaments of the Fide, not even as referee, coach or representative of one Chess Federation. In addition, Rausis is deprived of the Grandmaster title, the highest title in chess.

The Fide calls but also exceptions. Rausis may continue to participate in official online tournaments with the Fide rating. In addition, he should work despite the lock as a private chess coach, only in tournaments he may not be present as a coach. His license Fide as coach and referee Rausis is not withdrawn, and his score of 2685 Elo remains untouched.

Rausis cooperates with the Fide

The decision informed the Fide after an oral hearing with Rausis. In this, the 58-year-old has confessed his fraud and shown remorseful, so the World Association. Also present at the hearing was the so-called "chess detective" Ken Regan, a computer science professor from the United States, who supports the Fide in detecting such offenses using a computer program.

Although Rausis cooperated with the Fide, a precedent from 2015 also had an influence on the ban, the World Association said. At that time, the Georgian Gajos Nigalidse was locked for three years, after he had also been caught at the Dubai Open with the phone in the toilet.

For Rausis, the six-year suspension is probably synonymous with his career end as an active tournament player. In 2025 he will be 64 years old. After being caught in Strasbourg, he said, chess.com said, "I've already played my last game."
