Leverkusen had beaten Bayern in the past week. As the Munich lost to now also against Gladbach, Leverkusen could pass the record champions.
Leverkusen came early to the Schalke goal. Kai Havertz lifted the ball into the box, but Karim Bellarabi's volley from close range missed the goal (4 '). Schalke's first chance was a long-range effort from Raman, which Lukas Hradecky parried (8 '). The lead of the home side fell after a corner variant: Some Leverkusen positioned themselves in the penalty area and caused a crush, in which the outgoing goalkeeper Alexander Nübel did not reach the cross by Leon Bailey. Alario headed the ball into the empty net (15.).
Five minutes later, Bailey put down the presumptive 2: 0 with a margin, but referee Harm Osmers saw a previous offside position and did not count the score (20). Bayer remained the decisive team, had more possession and came more often in the attack. As a result of a long ball from Nübel Raman but had the chance to equalize. As he ran alone on Hradecky, he met with his shot but only the goalkeeper (27). Similarly Alario went just before the break, when he failed from two meters to Nübel (41).
Nübel looks unsafe
After the break Leverkusen remained dangerous at standards. Nübel was initially lucky that Leverkusen did not use it, that he could not hold a corner kick (48.). Shortly thereafter, Julian Baumgartlinger headed over a corner from a few meters over the goal (49.). In return, Raman cheered about his supposed equalizer, the hit counted because of a close offside but also not (50.).
After Schalke became active, but hardly came in Leverkusen penalty area. Some fouls in midfield interrupted the rhythm of the game. Leverkusen's Amiri tested Nübel with a low shot from behind, slamming the ball forward, and was happy that Ozan Kabak cleared ahead with the home side's strikers (78 '). However, the second Leverkusen goal fell ten minutes from time: Charles Aranguiz fitted in from the baseline to center Alario and pushed for the 2-0 (81).
The preliminary decision was not yet. In return, the substitute Ahmed Kutucu brought the ball from the right wing into the box. The pass slipped through the center and landed at Raman, who met unchallenged to the port (82). The catch-up was not successful.
