French World Champion coach Didier Deschamps has extended his contract until the end of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Then the 51-year-old coach agreed with the association president Noël Le Gräet. This was reported by the French federation FFF in Paris.
Deschamps, from Southwestern France's Bayonne, was already world champion in 1998, taking over Laurent Blanc's national team in 2012, and led them to a second title last year thanks to a 4-2 victory in the final against Croatia in Russia.
"I am very happy and very proud to continue the adventure," said Deschamps, who will soon replace Michel Hidalgo (January 1976 to June 1984) as the longest-serving French national coach. In 100 international matches under his leadership went "Les Bleus" 65 times as the winner from the square.
France will be the first German preliminary round opponent in Munich on June 16, 2020 at the upcoming European Championship finals. In the final tournament in their own country, the French had lost in 2016 the final against Portugal and thus missed the second European Championship triumph after 1984. The Portuguese will be playing in the same group as Germany and France next year.
