Goalkeeper Alexander Nübel will leave Bundesliga club Schalke 04 free of charge at the end of the season. The association confirmed that. The 23-year-old goalkeeper has declined the club's offer to extend the contract, which expires in summer 2020. TV channel Sky had previously reported about it.

"After all the discussions we have had with Alexander Nübel and his advisor in the past few months, we are not very surprised at his decision and respect it, of course. We do not have to understand his decision, however," said sports director Jochen Schneider, who recently announced had to do everything possible to retain the talent in the long term.
Where Nübel is going in summer is still unclear. Most recently, speculation about the interest of record champions FC Bayern Munich had been speculated. National goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is facing an extension of the contract.
Nübel came to Schalke from SC Paderborn in 2015. Last season, goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann replaced number one between the Gelsenkirchener posts. Markus Schubert is the successor to Nübel on Schalke. The U21 national goalkeeper is also considered a great goalkeeper talent.
After his brutal foul against Frankfurt's Mijat Gacinovic last weekend, Nübel is still serving a suspension and will only be allowed to play again on January 31.
