Karl Geiger in New Year's jumping: winner in second place

2020-01-01T17:53:20.328Z

Now he was ahead of the long-term winner Kobayashi - and yet had to give up again. For Karl Geiger, however, the results from Garmisch-Partenkirchen are worth much more.

Difficult conditions : Karl Geiger not only struggled with the weather conditions during the New Year's competition. In the event of a tailwind that pushes the jumpers down instead of carrying them, the German touring hope also had to jump onto the hill twice after high-flyer Ryoyu Kobayashi. And on both occasions Geiger was just able to leave the Japanese behind.

An almost impossible jump: in the second round, Geiger countered a 141-meter announcement by the previous year's winner with 141.5 meters. But it was the first jump that showed that the 26-year-old can also withstand the pressure as the first pursuer of Kobayashi. By far the worst conditions on the Gudiberg, he jumped as far as the defending champion before him, gaining 0.9 points more. It was a leap that could still make a difference in the course of the tour.

The result: New Year's jumping on the 68th four-hill tour of the Norwegian Marius Lindvik won in front of Geiger and Dawid Kubacki. Last year's winner Kobayashi came fourth. You can read the competition report here.

Missed four hill record : Kobayashi started this New Year's Show with five individual touring victories in a row. A success in Garmisch would have made the Japanese the first ski jumper in history with six successive victories. Now the 23-year-old remains in a team of five, who belongs among others to Sven Hannawald. The tour winner from 2001/2002 is the last German to have won in Garmisch. And the last German tour winner.

A hill record was set : Lindvik put down a set of 143.5 meters in the first round. The Norwegian flew as far as Simon Ammann ten years ago. "When I jumped off, I already knew that it was a good jump," said Lindvik after his record record on ZDF: "I only knew shortly before landing that it would be that far."

Surprise winner : That number 35 led the tableau after half of the race was unusual, but that the 21-year-old Lindvik was able to withstand the pressure in round two even under the most difficult conditions and was able to secure the day's victory day.

21-year-old Lindvik wins New Year's show jumping: into the New Year with a huge set

Surprise loser : In addition, the first round didn't have much to offer. The battered 53-time World Cup winner Gregor Schlierenzauer lost the Austrian duel against Stefan Kraft (129.9) with 124.5 meters. Philipp Aschenwald, who was second in qualification and the best jumper in the test run, showed nerves, steered uneasily through the air immediately after jumping and landed after just 114.5 meters. At this point, however, conditions had already worsened, the start-up had been shortened and record leaps like Lindvik's were no longer to be expected.

Lost flow : And the previous year's winner, the long-term winner, the dominator on the four hills? He has lost the lightness of the previous year. At least that's what his trainer Richard Schallert told the ZDF before the competition. Kobayashi benefits from a very stable basic technique, he doesn't have to think much about jumping. "But it is not yet as easy for him as it was last year," said the Austrian: "He has to get back into the flow."

Winner in second place: Like at the opening in Oberstdorf, Geiger finished second, but this time he landed in front of Kobayashi. The Japanese will wear the yellow jersey to Innsbruck (Saturday, 2 p.m., live ticker SPIEGEL), but his lead, which was 9.2 points before jumping in Garmisch, is melting. Due to his remarkable achievements, Geiger reduced the distance to the top to 6.3 points. The 26-year-old also has to look behind, the Pole Kubacki is only 2.2 points behind him. And yet: Kobayashi remains the fixed point for violinists. With that in mind, Geiger can feel like the winner of the day.
