Barcelona announced in an official statement today the dismissal of its coach Ernesto Valverde and the appointment of Kiki Seten as his successor until the summer of 2022.
Barcelona said in a statement that "an agreement has been reached between Barcelona and Ernesto Valverde regarding the termination of the contract with him as coach of the first team."
"Barcelona and Kiki Citin reached an agreement to contract him as coach of the first football team until June 30, 2022," the statement added. He will hold a press conference tomorrow to sign the contract.
The overthrow of Barcelona by Valverde comes after the 2-3 defeat against Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final and after a large campaign by the fans of the club who demanded his departure after a number of "historical" defeats, most notably the team losing 0-4 to Liverpool last season in the Champions League and a year earlier. Against Rome, 0-3 in the same championship.
The newspaper “Mundo Deportivo” stated that Cettin does not have training experience in major clubs, as he previously trained Betis, Las Palmas and Spanish clubs in the lower levels, but he was famous for playing an attractive attack style similar to that of Barcelona.
Spanish newspapers indicated that a number of coaches rejected the task of taking over Barcelona now, most notably the legend of the former team, Xavi Hernandez and the current Dutch national team coach Ronald Koeman.
