Japan's Naomi Osaka, the Australian Open champion, today received an unexpected defeat against rising American Coco Jove in the third round with two sets for nothing.

Reuters reported that 22-year-old Osaka called off the competition after losing to Jouf 15, 6-3 6-4.

With her defeat today, Osaka became the third player to win the Grand Slam title, competing in the current version today, after veteran American Serena Williams, 2017 champion, and Danish Caroline Wozniacki, who won the title in 2018 earlier in the day.

Goff will meet in the round of 16 with her 14th-ranked compatriot Sophia Kennin or Chinese Zhang Shuai.
