Handball: Dinart thanked, revolution at the head of the Blues

Didier Dinart is ousted from his position as coach of the France team. His assistant Guillaume Gille should replace him with for mis

The week ahead promised to be complicated for Didier Dinart, the coach of the French handball team, was near the fiasco of the last Euro and the pitiful elimination in the first round. But, ultimately, the suspense around the future of the 43-year-old coach will not last. His case was decided this Sunday: he is ousted from his post. Beyond the slap during the European Championship, Dinart's relationship with the majority of his players had also eroded.

After the continental competition, a meeting was organized for two days at the Maison du handball in Créteil, between the players and the technical staff. Not only did the divide between the two parties not disappear on this occasion, it even increased. The point of no return was reached and the main officials of French handball (Editor's note: Joel Delplanque, the president of the federation, Philippe Bana, the national technical director) decided to land Dinart. His positive record before the disaster of the Euro - world champion in 2017, bronze medal at Euro 2018 and at the World Championship 2019 - was therefore not considered sufficient to straighten the walls of the blue house.

The keys to it should therefore be entrusted to his assistant, Guillaume Gille. It is up to him to lead the commando operation, from April 16 to 19, during the Olympic Qualification Tournament (TQO) where the Blues will try to win their ticket for the Tokyo Olympics this summer.

Soon a Guillaume Gille-Thierry Anti ticket?

The mission will be delicate since France will notably face Croatia, vice-champion of Europe 2020, Portugal - which has just beaten France twice in the last three meetings - and Tunisia. And only the first two places will offer a ticket to Tokyo. It is therefore in the urgency of this TQO, which promises to be more complicated than expected that the national technical direction (DTN) has made the decision to oust Didier Dinart, who could not be reached by us. A priori, no one in the federation either saw fit to call him to warn him of his eviction ...

Two options were on the table. That of putting Dinart under supervision and forcing him to deal with a newcomer. Three names had been studied: Patrice Canayer, the Montpellier coach, openly declared candidate for the post, Thierry Anti, the ex-coach of Nantes today at Sporting Portugal and Raul Gonzalez, the PSG technician who had previously led Macedonia . But it seemed complicated to imagine Dinart accepting this tutelage without saying anything.

The second option, that of outright foreclosure, was therefore chosen. However, to try to succeed in the mission of winning the Olympic ticket, Guillaume Gille should not be alone. He could be offered to work with an experienced man like Thierry Anti, responsible for composing a pair with him, or even Patrice Canayer. There also remains the option of adding a man who successfully manages the selections of young people like ex-internationals Yohann Delattre or Eric Quintin.
