Ligue 1 has an additional world champion in its ranks. Steven Nzonzi, 31, is, as announced, loaned to Rennes by AS Roma until the end of the season with an option for an additional year if they qualify for the Champions League.
Out of business with Galatasaray, where he was dismissed by coach Fatih Terim, the midfielder had agreed with the Breton club on Sunday. It then remained at Roma, the player's owner and at Rennes, to agree on the terms of the loan and in particular the assumption of the salary of the international tricolor (14 selections).
This financial equation was not the easiest to reconcile with regard to Nzonzi's emoluments, slightly higher than 3 million euros (excluding bonus). In the end, the two sides managed to come to an agreement.
Euro 2020 in sight
Nzonzi will be presented to the public at Roazhon Park before the derby against Nantes this Friday (8.45pm). The native of Colombes, whose last game dates back to December 11 in the Champions League against PSG, has never yet played in Ligue 1. He has clearly made a sporting choice. If he wants to keep a small chance of being among the 23 players selected for Euro 2020, he must, in fact, recover playing time.
In Rennes, in a club, currently 3rd in the championship and natural candidate for C1, he will be offered this opportunity. His association with the young prodigy Eduardo Camavinga, 17 years old, should notably improve qualitatively the Rennes midfield.
