Thanks to Daniel Ginczek, VfL Wolfsburg wins for the first time this year. The defeated SC Paderborn had hoped for much more - and is now bottom of the table again.

Paderborn (dpa) - The long-injured Daniel Ginczek gave VfL Wolfsburg its first victory in the new football year and ended the crisis in Lower Saxony for the time being.

The attacker scored twice at the VW Club's 4-2 (2-1) win at SC Paderborn on Sunday evening and forgot about goal-striker Wout Weghorst's injury. The Paderborn team, on the other hand, missed celebrating two wins in a row for the first time this season and leaving relegation places. Instead, the newcomer dropped back to last place in the table a week after the victory in Freiburg.

"Here in Paderborn you are never through, they always play forwards. Today it was important to score three points here under very difficult conditions. The boys did great," said VfL trainer Oliver Glasner after the game at the TV Sky channel.

In front of 13,926 spectators, Ben Zolinski gave the hosts the lead in the 22nd minute. Robin Knoche (26.) and Ginczek (40., 60.) turned the game for the guests. Paderborn was outnumbered for more than an hour because Gerrit Holtmann had seen the red card (34.). With one player less, the team of coach Steffen Baumgart came through again through Sebastian Vasiliadis (72.), Maximilian Arnold made the decision with a nice free kick (76.).

"You can give red, but you won't get a big club," said Paderborns managing director Martin Przondziono. "If it is 2: 3 longer, maybe something is still possible. After Arnold's nice free kick, the game was over. The performance was right, we are not giving up." Baumgart said at Sky: "The boys have put a lot of effort, did a lot, but unfortunately you have to say that we made a lot of mistakes."

With the prospect of leaving the relegation zone for the first time since the very early phase of the season, the Paderborners began with a bold move. Baumgart relied on a brave 4-3-3 system with Dennis Srbeny as the central leader. And the striker who returned from England in the winter had the first chance for the promoted player in the eleventh minute, but failed because of Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels. The guests needed something to get going. But then Ginczek had the lead on foot, but did not get the ball past Paderborn's goalkeeper Leopold Zingerle.

The hosts initially remained the dominant team and took the lead through Zolinski. After a corner, the defense of the guests was in deep sleep, so that Zolinski could shoot. However, the joy of East Westphalia did not last long. After a free kick from Arnold, Knoche headed to equalize.

Until the change of sides it became even more bitter for the home side. Holtmann first saw the red card after a blow to Renato Steffen - a tough decision by referee Patrick Ittrich. Then Ginczek took care of the Wolfsburg leadership, where SCP goalkeeper Zingerle looked bad. Overall, the entire Paderborn defensive without the suspended Jamilu Collins and Klaus Gjasula looked very shaky.

After the break, Ginczek seemed to have quickly cleared things up with his second goal. But Paderborn was not in an extremely hectic game, in which Paderborn's managing director Martin Przondziono, among other things, saw the yellow card because of complaining, which Vasiliadis rewarded. Four minutes later, Arnold made everything clear.
