Berlin (dpa) - World Champion Malaika Mihambo was the third German long jumper to break the seven-meter mark at the Istaf Indoor in Berlin.

The 26-year-old from the LG Kurpfalz jumped 7.07 meters in the last round on Friday evening, repeating her previous year's success. "The whole competition was difficult, so I'm all the happier that my last jump was successful," said the winner.

Mihambo was 28 centimeters ahead of second-placed Nigerian Ese Brume (6.79) in the second indoor competition of the Olympic season. Belarusian Nastassja Mirontschik-Iwanowa (6.75 meters) secured third place at the indoor athletics meeting.

Mihambo was greeted with thunderous applause by the 12,500 spectators in the sold-out Mercedes-Benz Arena right from the start. Only two DLV athletes had previously achieved the seven meters in the hall: world record holder Heike Drechsler (7.37 meters / 1988) and Helga Radtke (7.09 meters / 1985).
