Liga: Eibar-Real Sociedad match postponed due to air quality

The Spanish championship match between Eibar and Real Sociedad, scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed due to air pollution.


The 24th day La Liga match between Eibar and Real Sociedad, scheduled for Sunday at 4 p.m., has been postponed due to poor air quality near Zaldibar (Biscay), where a landslide occurred in a landfill.

"Real Sociedad and SD Eibar have decided not to play in the match the two teams will play tomorrow (Sunday) in Ipurua," Real Sociedad announced on Saturday in a statement, in agreement with La Liga and the Spanish federation football (RFEF).

"The competition committee, in agreement with the clubs involved and following the recommendations of the Basque government, has decided to suspend the Eibar - Real Sociedad which was to take place tomorrow (Sunday) in Ipurua", said the RFEF on Saturday .

A landslide in a landfill causing pollution

The health department of the government of the province of the Basque Country had recommended to avoid playing sports in this area, after a landslide took place on February 6 in the Zaldibar landfill, located about eight kilometers from the stadium of Ipurua, the land of Eibar.

Two employees of the Verter Recycling company, which manages the waste treatment site, are still missing since this accident. The date on which the Guipuzcoa derby will be reprogrammed has not yet been decided.
