Ligue 1: "Futsal has brought me a lot," says Wissam Ben Yedder

2020-02-17T07:14:42.809Z

The current top scorer of the championship with Monaco was present in Paris this Sunday to attend the final of Impulstar, a great tournament

It was a kind of homecoming and his first love for Wissam Ben Yedder. Even if he was not on the ground of Coubertin (Paris XVI) this Sunday, the striker of AS Monaco and the Blues (8 selections) had insisted on being present for the 9th final of Impulstar, a tournament of street football for 14-16 year olds which brought together 20 teams mainly from neighborhoods in a warm atmosphere.

Enough to remember fond memories of the current top scorer in Ligue 1 with 15 goals, ahead of Kylian Mbappé (14) and Neymar (13), revealed at futsal in Garges (Val-d'Oise), where he grew up, before to be spotted in Alfortville in the 4th Division ten years ago. He answered our questions except those relating to Monaco and the Blues, according to the instructions given by his entourage.

Why did you care about being there?

WISSAM BEN YEDDER. The tournament has been around for nine years, and I have followed all the editions. There are many young people who want to succeed in football. Today, I have come to give them strength and lead by example so that they continue to believe in their chances of playing at a high level one day. This tournament can allow young people to be seen and be spotted by professional clubs.

Do you recognize yourself in these young people?

Of course. I too have been there. I made sure to show myself off to the recruiters. Today, these young people have the opportunity to express themselves. If I had to give them advice, it's to have fun and not let go.

What did futsal bring you?

This sport has brought me a lot. A little more technique, the ability to be free in small spaces, to dribble players to eliminate them, to score in closed angles, to play faster on one or two touches of the ball. Today, it still serves me. In modern football, you need to make decisions quickly and play fast.

Do you still maintain a particular attachment to the region?

I know where I come from, where I grew up and I don't forget. If I can set an example for young people and people ... Even if we are a little physically far from the family, we must take advantage of these opportunities.

If you had been told ten years ago, when you played in the CFA at the UJA that you would one day be a top scorer in Ligue 1 and in the France team, would you have believed it?

No, one can imagine it, but one cannot know it. Every day is different. You always have to keep the hope and the ambition to realize your dreams. When we want we can. It is important to show and tell young people that they can do it.
